Carpenter ants get their name because they excavate wood in order to build their nests. Their excavation results in smooth tunnels inside the wood. Carpenter ants range in size from ¼ of an inch for a worker ant to up to ³⁄₄ of an inch for a queen.
Carpenter ants typically attack wood that is or has been wet. They usually come into buildings through cracks around doors and windows, holes in a structure meant for wires, or through wet, damaged wood. They will also crawl along overhead wires, shrubs or tree limbs that touch the building far above the ground. Carpenter ants build their nests in various wood sources including tree stumps, fence posts, firewood or landscaping. A colony can have multiple nests inside structures as well as outdoors. Carpenter ants need a constant water source to survive. carpenter ants are a type of ant that live and nest in water damaged or rotten wood. They don’t digest the wood; however, they will use it to build and expand their nest. These ants can cause severe structural damage if the infestation is left for too long. If the ants have wings, they are the reproductive queens and males. In this case, the ants have been there for a very long time and can be even harder to eliminate.

Pavement ants are a common problem for home and business owners as they routinely invade buildings while foraging for food. These black ants will eat almost anything. Pavement ants have been known to consume insects, seeds, honeydew, honey, bread, meats, nuts and cheese. They forage in trails for distances of up to 30 feet and are known to climb masonry walls that enter into occupied areas.

Pharaoh ants are commonly found in commercial food handling establishments such as hotels, grocery stores and hospitals. Inside, they nest in warm, humid areas near food and water sources. Nests are usually located in inaccessible areas such as wall voids, behind baseboards, in furniture and under floors. These ants often use electrical and telephone wires as a highway system to travel through walls and between floorboards.
Colonies of Pharaoh ants tend to be large, with workers numbering in the thousands. If disturbed, members of the colony will migrate to new locations to establish several new colonies through a process called budding.Pharaoh ants feed on a variety of food sources including sweets, oils and proteins. They will also eat other dead insects.
